From Maggie Herrick, Social Studies Program Advisor,
Arkansas Department of Education
American Government is a 1-semester high school elective course.
Civics for Core Curriculum is a 1-semester civics class for students whose parents have determined not to place them in the Smart Core curriculum.
Civics, as well as
Civics/American Government, is the 2-semester course required of all smart core students beginning with the 2006-07, 9th-grade class. Essentially this is the same course –
Civics/American Government has a little more American government than
Civics. The specific courses and SLEs can be compared to determine which course a district would prefer to offer and teach, but both
Civics and
Civics/American Government meet the requirements.
