Tech Tips

If you are looking for a great website that has games that you can use for both teaching and review purposes, check out:

http://www.purposegames.com

This site has all kinds of map games plus other games that you can use in your classroom. The best part is the site is free. Talking about other good free websites, if you need a quick vocabulary word test creator, scholastic has one that is quick and simple to use. Simply go to: http://wordwizard.scholastic.com/quizmaker/ and enter your vocabulary words and the test creator does the rest. Scholastic has the definitions already there; you just select the one that is most appropriate for you. The definitions are also grade level sensitive. Feel free to contact me at wilsonl@hssd.net if you have questions about these sites or any other technology questions.

Have you ever found a great website and saved it in you favorites, then log on to another computer and not be able to remember the website’s URL? I have a great solution for you. A free website, www.delicious.com, allows you to keep all of you favorites in one location. Set up a username and password and you are in business! Right-click on a website and Delicious will ask you if you want to save it to Delicious. Or when you find a site that you want to remember, just log into your Delicious account and copy and paste the URL of that website into Delicious. Whether you are at home or at school or work, you can now find that site that you wanted to remember. You can also find other people’s favorites on the Delicious home page.

If you want to find intriguing new websites, you need www.stumbleupon.com. This nifty little tool downloads to your computer. A “stumble” button is placed in your toolbar. You set your preferences to the things in which you have an interest—history, education, crafts, travel--whatever. Then all you have to do is click on the “stumble” button and you are taken to a website that matches your interests. I have “stumbled upon” some really cool websites using this feature. You can save those sites in you Delicious account and build up a great collection of resources and ideas.
